A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
