An esteemed Russian military figure has been fatally wounded following an blast in Moscow, according to official statements.
The attack occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
The committee stated that one line of inquiry suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has offered no public response.
Scene of the Incident
Teams have been sent to the scene, which is said to be in a southern district of the capital.
Accounts indicate the explosion took place in a parking area close to a residential building.
History of Targeted Attacks
Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.
This new event comes after other serious incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was set off from a distance.
While a source from Ukraine earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are never publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.
The conflict has increasingly seen clandestine operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be ongoing.
