Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Debate
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in defense or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all made an vow to protect and uphold this founding document," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our constitution are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that break the law or our founding principles."
The Former President's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a angry response from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a unified declaration censuring the comments.
"Political violence has no role in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our nation with great national pride and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the security of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Defiant Answer
The officials who participated in the video also released a response.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who love this United States and took an pledge to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it punishable by execution for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must join forces and censure the ex-president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the terminology and establish all that."
Administration Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the official said. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the president's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and that's what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
