Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
