Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Initiating Derogatory Songs About Coach Chris Wilder

Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United only seven months following instigating derogatory chants directed at their manager, Chris Wilder.

The 32-year-old striker, without a club since leaving Leeds United, has agreed to a deal joining the second-tier club in difficulty through the winter. His lengthy career with Leeds concluded by mutual consent this past summer.

Among the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player included starting offensive chants about Chris Wilder during the club’s promotion celebrations in April. Now, the one-cap England player will feature under Wilder as the Blades’ manager seeks to pull the team he loves out of the drop zone.

Past Conflict Involving the Striker & the Manager

The pair had a past before Leeds won promotion to the Premier League the previous campaign while Sheffield United lost the playoff final by Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as a "muppet" back when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United won automatic promotion while Leeds missed out in the playoffs.

Making Amends & Moving Forward

All seems to have been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the league's lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost in attack and Bamford looking to resurrect his career.

The Wilder chant spread widely in April. An apologetic Patrick and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the next day.

Wilder said at the time: “Had a conversation with Pat recently and I’ve no problem whatsoever with that. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow professional! But I appreciated and admired him calling me.

“We had 20 minutes and the same again I talked with Daniel Farke too and we had a longer discussion with him and he is a great person, a top guy. When I was playing we would dish it out and accept it and that is part and parcel of football at every level, even on Sunday league. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I said that to Pat.”

Recent Playing Challenges

Bamford made 18 games with Leeds United last season however the former Forest, Chelsea and Boro striker has faced difficulties with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
