The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
After a quarter-century span, no portion of California is enduring drought conditions. This milestone comes on the heels of grueling years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated blaze threats and pressured its enormous farming industry.
A Chart Shows No Drought
The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that the entire state is free from dry or drought conditions. This change came after a period of significant storms that topped up key lakes like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
Achieving this status featured powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, causing significant overflow, blackouts, and deaths. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge
But, experts warn that the end of drought status is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.
This mountain snow, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to sustaining this positive water situation throughout the rest of the year.
