This Limited-Edition Pikachu Promo Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Speculators

To celebrate the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside the Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store featuring exclusive merchandise. Enthusiasts will find offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork that are inspired by the institution's aesthetic. For collectors, though, is a specially made Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. This shop will operate from on-site at the museum to its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book Behind the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated tome packed with beautiful artwork depicting Pokémon in their natural habitats. It's essentially is what an in-world scientist might publish once trainers submit their data, or what Charles Darwin could have sketched if the Galapagos teemed with Pidgeys instead of birds. Part of the charm lies in the book's scholarly treatment, presenting Pokémon as worthy of scientific study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Special Card Different

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company special edition cards celebrating major tournaments and crossover partnerships. Many of these promotional cards typically highlight the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new promotion apart is its unusually large dimensions. While precise specs were not immediately shared, availability is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with customers limited to just one card with each transaction.

Limiting Speculator Interest

Per a company statement, some of the pop-up items may also be available beyond the institution itself. But, broader availability will only be select retailers within the United Kingdom. Critically, fans cannot acquire this promo via the official web shop. While speculator demand is inevitable, the setup suggests they're going to have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those feeling left out, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display coming to the Windy City later this year.

"Every penny of sales from the Museum shop and from its online store, including these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the research of 400 scientists dedicated to conducting studies to discover solutions to the global ecological crisis," the statement says.
