UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
