The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
